This book is a peek into the present Supply Chain Management Scenario of Bangladesh. The rise of super shops in developing countries as well as in Bangladesh, considering it as a huge market opportunity that can be used as an engine for poverty alleviation and development. The question that arises is what are the factors that hamper small traders to participate in super shops supply chains and take advantage of these potentialities. While in the traditional spot markets, there is not necessary an ex ante or ex post relationship between buyers and sellers, super shops procurement systems demand a coordinated relationship with suppliers in order to guarantee a reliable supply consistent with specific requirements. Thus it is important to research the determinant factors of smooth supply chain management systems in such vertically-coordinated relationships.

This book provides an overview of hydrochemical characteristics and quality of supply water served for drinking purposes at different food shops of an urban city in a developing country like Bangladesh. The results of the water analyses show that pH varies from 6.30 to 6.94, TDS from 525 to 1223 mg/l, salinity from 0.33 to 1.17 ppt. The results of the potability assessment also reveal that almost all of the water samples satisfy the Bangladesh drinking water quality standard except calcium parameter and only 20% of the water samples are above the permissible limit of magnesium. Finally, the study suggests that the served water at different food shops can be used for drinking purposes with no health risk if E. coli counts in drinking water satisfy the country standard and the present study has developed a framework guideline to meet the standard of drinking water for the food shops.

Making Markets More Inclusive

Most studies of doing business at the "bottom of the economic pyramid" focus on viewing the poor as consumers, as micro-entrepreneurs, or as potential employees of local companies. Almost no analysis focuses on the poor as primary producers of agricultural commodities a striking omission given that primary producers are by far the largest segment of the working-age population in developing economies.Making Markets More Inclusive bridges the management literature with original research on agricultural value chains in developing and emerging economies. This exciting work is the first to delve into the skills, capabilities, strategies and approaches needed for inclusive value chain development. McKague shows how NGOs and companies can connect poor producers in developing economies with the right markets to better create social and economic impact. He also analyzes one of the leading agricultural value chain initiatives in the world, which is being replicated by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in several different value chains in Malawi, Tanzania, Ghana, India, and Mali.Want more?
