America Walks into a Bar: A Spirited History of...

When George Washington bade farewell to his officers, he did so in New York´s Fraunces Tavern. When Andrew Jackson planned his defense of New Orleans against the British in 1815, he met Jean Lafitte in a grog shop. And when John Wilkes Booth plotted with his accomplices to carry out a certain assassination, they gathered in Surratt Tavern. In America Walks into a Bar, Christine Sismondo recounts the rich and fascinating history of an institution often reviled, yet always central to American life. She traces the tavern from England to New England, showing how even the Puritans valued ´´a good Beere´´. With fast-paced narration and lively characters, she carries the story through the twentieth century and beyond, from repeated struggles over licensing and Sunday liquor sales, from the Whiskey Rebellion to the temperance movement, from attempts to ban ´´treating´´ to Prohibition and repeal. As the cockpit of organized crime, politics, and everyday social life, the bar has remained vital - and controversial - down to the present. In 2006, when the Hurricane Katrina Emergency Tax Relief Act was passed, a rider excluded bars from applying for aid or tax breaks on the grounds that they contributed nothing to the community. Sismondo proves otherwise: the bar has contributed everything to the American story. In this heady cocktail of agile prose and telling anecdotes, Sismondo offers a resounding toast to taprooms, taverns, saloons, speakeasies, and the local hangout where everybody knows your name. 1. What happens when the haggling is done and the shops are closed? When the quest has been given, the steeds saddled, and the adventurers are off to their next encounter? They keep the world running, the food cooked, and the horses shoed, yet what adventurer has ever spared a thought or concern for the Non-Player Characters? In the town of Maplebark, four such NPCs settle in for a night of actively ignoring the adventurers drinking in the tavern when things go quickly and fatally awry. Once the dust settles, these four find themselves faced with an impossible choice: pretend to be adventurers undertaking a task of near-certain death or see their town and loved ones destroyed. Armed only with salvaged equipment, second-hand knowledge, and a secret that could get them killed, it will take all manner of miracles if they hope to pull off their charade. And even if they succeed, the deadliest part of their journey may well be what awaits them at its end. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Roger Wayne. How to Write a Script With Dialogue that Doesn´...

Want to know how to write a script that people will remember, and can catch the attention of producers and other above-the-line talent? (Don´t worry about agents; they don´t want to talk to you). Nail your dialogue. Really. Now I know you´ve heard all the maxims: Film is a Visual Medium; You Can Either Write Dialogue or You Can´t. And they both sound very logical. And esteemed writers, such as David Mamet, have been preaching them for years. But, in my not so humble opinion, they´re both total bullcrap. Yes, when learning how to write a movie you want to focus on structure and plot. And you don´t want dialogue-heavy scenes where characters sit in coffee shops for three pages. But dialogue is the ONE PART of movie scripts that readers, producers, story editors and development exectuives will absolutely read. The same can´t be said for your scene description. I know, that breaks your heart. (You spent hours working on your lean description of a car chase involving nuns on mopeds). But when skimming, and lots of script readers skim, dialogue is the most efficient/easiest way to do it. So if it´s so important how he heck do we get you better at it. 1. Language: English. Berenice Abbott was one of the first people to photograph New York. Seen through her camera lens the city became a living entity, a remarkable character whom visitors can now pursue as they move through its crowded streets, looking upwards to discover the modern beauty of its skyscrapers. Shops, people, bridges, streets, interiors, famous buildings under construction seen from outside or from above together make up this portrait. The publication presents Berenice Abbott´s work in several themes: her portraits, photographs of the city and scientific photographs. The opening section celebrates the modernity in Abbott´s portraits of mouldbreaking individuals who changed the world from the mid-1920s onwards. The second part offers a dazzling portrait of New York, and explores Abbott´s relationship with Atget and her fascination for him. It includes an introductory group of Atget´s photographs, which she printed from his negatives. The third and final section focuses on Abbott´s scientific photographs, which she began producing in the late 1940s.

Which important Austen characters never speak? Is there any sex in Austen? What do the characters call one another, and why? What are the right and wrong ways to propose marriage? In What Matters in Jane Austen?, John Mullan shows that we can best appreciate Austen´s brilliance by looking at the intriguing quirks and intricacies of her fiction. Asking and answering some very specific questions about what goes on in her novels, he reveals the inner workings of their greatness. In 20 short chapters, each of which explores a question prompted by Austen’s novels, Mullan illuminates the themes that matter most in her beloved fiction. Listeners will discover when Austen´s characters had their meals and what shops they went to; how vicars got good livings; and how wealth was inherited. What Matters in Jane Austen? illuminates the rituals and conventions of her fictional world in order to reveal her technical virtuosity and daring as a novelist. It uses telling passages from Austen´s letters and details from her own life to explain episodes in her novels: listeners will find out, for example, what novels she read, how much money she had to live on, and what she saw at the theater. Written with flair and based on a lifetime´s study, What Matters in Jane Austen? will allow listeners to appreciate Jane Austen´s work in greater depth than ever before. 1. Language: English. Based on the series produced for the BBC World Service Who thought up paper money? How did the contraceptive pill change the face of the legal profession? Why was the horse collar as important for human progress as the steam engine? How did the humble spreadsheet turn the world of finance upside-down? The world economy defies comprehension. A continuously-changing system of immense complexity, it offers over ten billion distinct products and services, doubles in size every fifteen years, and links almost every one of the planet´s seven billion people. It delivers astonishing luxury to hundreds of millions. It also leaves hundreds of millions behind, puts tremendous strains on the ecosystem, and has an alarming habit of stalling. Nobody is in charge of it. Indeed, no individual understands more than a fraction of what´s going on. How can we make sense of this bewildering system on which our lives depend? From the tally-stick to Bitcoin, the canal lock to the jumbo jet, each invention in Tim Harford´s fascinating new book has its own curious, surprising and memorable story, a vignette against a grand backdrop. Step by step, readers will start to understand where we are, how we got here, and where we might be going next. Hidden connections will be laid bare: how the barcode undermined family corner shops; why the gramophone widened inequality; how barbed wire shaped America. We´ll meet the characters who developed some of these inventions, profited from them, or were ruined by them. We´ll trace the economic principles that help to explain their transformative effects. And we´ll ask what lessons we can learn to make wise use of future inventions, in a world where the pace of innovation will only accelerate.
