Mike Daisey is a fierce storyteller, one minute hilarious, the next minute sweet, with a fine-tuned ear for digression. He circles in on his uneasy subject matter, closer and closer, until he exposes the raw heart. The New York Times calls him ´´the master storyteller´´ and he has been compared to Garrison Keillor, Spalding Gray, and David Sedaris. In these seven monologues, recorded before live audiences at New York´s Performance Space 122, Daisey tells true stories from his life that range from the terrible beauty of his rural Maine hometown, to shipping weapons to the Middle East, to the unintentionally hilarious dangers of defending free speech. In Where Water Meets With Water, Mike explores the geography of his hometown in far northern Maine, where the natives wait for the St. John´s River´s ice to melt every spring and barber shops are filled with talk of how many bodies of the winter´s lost will be found headed out to sea. Playing counterpoint are the details of a new Manhattan institution: a divorce party for friends who want their marriage to disintegrate cleanly. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Mike Daisey. In one of London´s most elegant shops, a decorative doll in green velvet adopts some rather human, and sinister, traits.... A country gentleman is questioned about a murder that has yet to be committed.... While summoning spirits, a medium is drawn closer to the world of the dead than she ever imagined possible.... In a small country church, a dying man´s last word, sanctuary, becomes both an elegy and a clue to a crime. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Isla Blair, Joan Hickson, Anna Massey. The Grenfell Tower fire broke out on 14th June 2017 in North Kensington. Over 150 homes were destroyed, and there were more than 70 casualties. With such extensive destruction, it’s hard to remember what it looked like before. One year on, this audiobook honours the Grenfell community and how its residents banded together through adversity. Gaby Doherty witnessed the fire firsthand; her husband, Revd. Dr. Sean Doherty, a Church of England minister, was the first clergy person on the scene. Good things can arise from harrowing adversities. Gaby and her husband live in a flat nearby The Tower, and she lost friends in the fire. Gaby’s account will make you understand what it was like living in North Kensington and how even the smallest gesture can change lives. In the aftermath of the fire, the community came together and raised aid efforts. God was seen in their actions, inspiring hope in what felt like a once futile situation. This book stems from personal experience of the impact of the fire. It features the testimony of locals, residents of the tower and those who came to help as well as on and by the community that experienced it, and the amazing stories of hope that followed in its wake. Grenfell Hope will help listeners understand what it was like living in North Kensington before and after the fire. It will help engage the listener with poverty issues, to examine attitudes to the poor and to consider how even small gestures in everyday life can change local communities. In the desperate situation of the fire, God was at work in people’s hearts, bringing hope in tiny gestures that mounted up to something enormous. Hope that couldn’t be ignored or even contained. Hope sprang out all over the country. About the author: Gaby was born a farmer’s granddaughter who, from the age of 5 to 18, lived on a farm in rural Somerset, with the nearest shops three miles away. Her experience of life was limited to the West Country,... 1. Language: English. Narrator: Gaby Doherty, Alex Tregear, Neil Gardner. The three tales in this audiobook are adapted from stories told by the peasants in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. They are drawn from some books I found in shops when I visited the former USSR in 1988 as part of a citizen diplomacy group. I was intrigued by these folktales, since my paternal grandmother lived for some time in Odessa in the Ukraine. Also, I found these stories share a common theme - the poor peasant is able to succeed despite obstacles against an unfair ruler. He does so by being wise and generous and having a strong desire to help and protect his family. Generally, the rich merchant or powerful ruler is foiled by his own greed and stupidity. These stories come from the Ukraine, Latvia, and Turkmen. They are three of my favorite stories. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Randy Whitlow. Gold Medal Winner 2012 eLit Awards Kirkus Recommended Review: ´´In seven short stories, residents of a London boardinghouse reach moments of clarity. On London Road, lined with scruffy shops, stands No. 17, a detached red-brick Victorian that´s been turned into a boardinghouse. Its residents tend toward hard luck and desperation: Janice is just out of prison; Mandy is on probation; Bitty has a good education, but is scarred by her mother´s frequent abandonments; and Isobel is mentally unstable. Nora, the landlady, writes romance novels but has experienced little romance herself, and her daughter, Anna, is disgusted by Isobel´s outbursts. Their interconnected stories take place on a day of unusually hot weather, and focus on one resident at a time, with Janice´s story told in two parts. In each, characters have a chance to make a leap of faith in other people, or in the future.... Though spare and fast-paced, McGovern´s (Cocktails for Book Lovers, 2014, etc.) tales evoke entire biographies. She focuses on illuminative details and subtle, turning-point moments, as when Mandy, a young woman on probation, reacts to her mandatory book group´s reading of Katherine Mansfield´s 1922 short story ´´The Garden Party.´´ It stokes her resentment, as she doesn´t even know if people still give garden parties. Mandy makes plans to shoplift again, but something about the book group leader´s hopefulness and the invitation to give her honest opinion sparks her determination to win - maybe a literary argument, or maybe more chocolate wafers. Tales with subtle, positive but never saccharine, transformations that feel fully earned.´´ ´´...reminiscent of the writer who appears in one of the stories: the great Katherine Mansfield.´´ - Cynthia Rogerson, winner, V.S. Pritchett Memorial Prize for a Short Story, UK ´´I felt as if I personally knew each character, from Janice to Nora to Isobel to Bitty, and even Len down at the pub, and ... 1. Language: English.
